Two Squeezed Hyperscalers: Does Meta or Amazon Have The Bigger Cash Flow Problem?

Quick Read

AMZN burned -$8.8B in free cash flow last quarter, but META's slim $784M surplus masks deeper structural risk with no cloud revenue to recoup hardware costs.
-
AWS hit a 39% margin with a $496B backlog, giving Amazon a metered cash recovery loop that Meta's ad-only model cannot match.

Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) and Meta (NASDAQ: META) both reported second-quarter results in late July, revealing the same pressure: AI infrastructure is consuming cash. Amazon spent $53.1 billion on capex in a single quarter. Meta spent $31.1 billion. The question is which giant faces the bigger cash flow problem.
AWS Prints Cash While Meta's Ad Engine Absorbs the Bill
Amazon's quarter was carried by AWS, which grew 36.7% year-over-year to $42.2 billion, the fastest pace in 18 quarters. Backlog reached $496 billion. Andy Jassy told investors AI and chips each cleared $25 billion run rates with triple-digit growth. Trainium is locked into multi-gigawatt contracts with Anthropic and OpenAI.
Meta's revenue rose 27.96% to $60.8 billion, with ad impressions up 14% and average price per ad up 12%. Operating income fell 8.15%, margin compressed from 43% to 31%, and EPS of $6.18 came in 14.42% below expectations, snapping a six-quarter streak.

Rent the Racks or Feed the Algorithm
Amazon rents its buildout. Jassy said data centers monetize starting two years after ground breaks, with server gear typically breaks even in a little less than three years, and most AI capacity locked into 5-year contracts. That creates a visible cash-back loop.

Meta has no cloud tenant to invoice. Susan Li said the company is "getting a lot of offers for compute at a significant premium over what we paid for it," and a one gigawatt BlackRock data center venture in El Paso hints at future third-party revenue. For now, the payoff shows up as 15.7% conversion uplift on Facebook and an Advantage Plus run rate over $75 billion. Long-term debt sits at $83.66 billion, filling the gap.
The Next Test Is Whether the Buildout Pays Back on Schedule
Amazon plans roughly $200 billion of capex in 2026. Meta narrowed its range to $130 to $145 billion. Watch AWS margin, which reached 39% this quarter, and whether Trainium sales to outside data centers become a real revenue line. For Meta, the tell is whether business agents (already used by more than 1 million businesses on WhatsApp) and the API business meaningfully offset capex that has doubled year-over-year.
Why Amazon Has the Smaller Cash Flow Problem
Both are squeezed differently. Amazon holds the title for actual cash drain, with a cycle that has swung negative under $220B in capex. Meta looks more structurally exposed, spending software-giant levels of capital on compute without a direct B2B cloud to rent that hardware and recover cash flow. Shares reflect it: Meta is down 13.42% in the past month while Amazon is up 3.02%.
AWS gives a visible meter that ticks up every time capex converts into contracted revenue. On valuation, META trades at a P/E of 21, a cheaper multiple than Amazon, though one more quarter of stable margins would help confirm whether Meta's ad-optimization ROI is translating into durable earnings power.
